The rains increased in intensity this winter, causing consequences in several cities. One of them is Durán, whose streets have been flooded in recent days.
In some areas of this canton, residents and merchants had to go out with brooms and shovels to clean their facades or even to draw water. Among them are those on Laurice Antón de Salem Avenue, which connects the five stages of the El Recreo citadel. Locals who have been repeating this story for more than two decades claim to the authorities: “It is not right to live like this”, because in addition to flooded streets, there is also damage to property and the presence of mosquitoes due to the accumulation of water. The Municipality of that city stated that the main reason was that the large amount of water that fell coincided with the tide.

There were also flooded streets in Guayaquil, and in the citadel of El Paraíso, neighbors fear greater damage from landslides due to the rain that lasted for more than 15 hours between Monday and Tuesday alone, and which, due to the shape of the sector, creates water channels that descend from the top of the hill even and small and medium waterfalls.
It is important that the authorities monitor what is happening with sewerage and drainage, and look for solutions to improve stormwater management in these cantons and options that prevent areas from being flooded during high tides. Likewise, citizens must fulfill their obligation of quality waste management in order not to deepen the problem with everything that gets into the sewers and clogs their entrances.
The rains will continue in Quito until the weekend
Also remember the importance of a city that grows with planning, since when there are new settlements or expansions without the necessary sanitary infrastructure, the risks increase when a storm like the current one occurs, which according to Inhami is due to abnormal temperatures that have affected rainfall. Prevention is a joint task. (OR)
