Ukraine has done its “homework” to join NATO in the field of technical interoperability, the alliance also sees the proximity of Kyiv in terms of values and long-term strategic interests. The Ukrainian authorities “remain only to solve the problems of armed conflict and territorial dispute,” said the newly elected Czech president, retired general, former head of the NATO Military Committee Petr Pavel.

According to RBC, Pavel stressed that the Ukrainian military “will probably be the most experienced of all, and would be a great advantage for the NATO countries.” In his opinion, the issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO should be considered immediately after the end of the conflict.

At the same time, the politician admitted that the authorities and people of Ukraine may consider that “the return of the territories occupied by Russia will require an unacceptable number of victims,” but the West should not “push Ukraine into concessions.” According to Pavel, “only Ukraine can make such a decision, because not our people are dying there.”

The new Czech president also noted that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky “could not fail to declare the intention of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to return all the lost regions,” but admitted that Kyiv could make adjustments to these plans.

Petr Pavel won the Czech presidential election on January 28, 2023. He will replace Milos Zeman in this post in less than two weeks, on March 9, 2023.
