At the Esmeraldas jail, the Armed Forces executed overflights as part of an arms control operation.
The Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil, where 68 inmates were murdered on Saturday, was not the only prison where the Public Force had to intervene that day. In Machala, El Oro province, an inmate who tried to escape was electrocuted. While weapons were found outside the Santo Domingo prison and a control operation was carried out in the Esmeraldas prison.
An inmate who tried to escape by climbing up the wall of the sentry box in Pavilion 2 of the Machala Social Rehabilitation Center suffered an electric shock and was immediately isolated by prison agents, who with the help of police units conducted a search to take control of this prison center.
The alert was reported at 08:15 on Saturday, when the massacre at the Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil was already known. “The inmate (detained for femicide) was trying to scale the wall facing Manuel Estomba street, apparently he took advantage of the fact that the door was opened to allow visitors to enter,” explained Colonel Carlos Mora, District Chief of the National Police in Machala .
An ambulance of the Fire Department with medical personnel entered the jail to provide first aid to the inmate, who after several minutes was stable.
Police and military personnel were deployed around the prison, and visits were also suspended for more than two hours.
Constitutional Court responded to President Guillermo Lasso’s call for attention on the prison issue
It was revealed that this Social Rehabilitation Center is overcrowded. A cell that is built for three people to occupy is currently inhabited by up to 15 inmates, Colonel Mora said.
They seize weapons in Santo Domingo and deploy an operation in Esmeraldas
A revolver and eight knives in a pouch were found by soldiers outside the Centro de Rehabilitación Social de Men de Santo Domingo de los Colorados, in the Tsáchila province.
The discovery of the weapons was achieved with the use of metal detectors that personnel from the Engineer Battalion No. 67 Montúfar used to verify weapons and explosives in the prison perimeter.
The firearm and knives, which were handed over to the National Police, were wrapped in a white bag, apparently buried next to a wall of the prison.
Meanwhile, in the Esmeraldas prison, Armed Forces personnel executed overflights in a Naval Aviation helicopter as part of an operation to control weapons, ammunition and explosives on the access roads, as well as in the first filter of entry of people to this prison.
Until the morning of this Sunday the 14th, no news was reported with the inmates in both prisons, authorities of Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo indicated. (I)
