US President Joe Biden said that in the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (START-3) with the United States, there are no signs of preparations for a nuclear strike by Moscow. It is reported by RBC with reference to ABC.
“This is a big mistake. It’s not very responsible. But I don’t see in this what he thinks about using nuclear weapons or anything like that,” Biden said.
He noted that he was confident in the ability of Russia and the United States “to fix this”, in the situation with the suspension of Moscow’s participation in the agreement, a solution would be found, since countries need to work responsibly in this area. Biden stressed, “This is also what the rest of the world expects of us.”
Russia and the United States signed the current START-3 strategic offensive arms treaty in 2010 for ten years. It was signed by Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama. At the beginning of 2021, the contract was extended until February 5, 2026.
Putin announced the decision to suspend Russia’s participation in the treaty in a message to the Federal Assembly on February 21. The next day, the suspension bill was supported by both houses of parliament – the Duma and the Federation Council.
UN Secretary General António Guterres called for the immediate resumption of the treaty, the French Foreign Ministry expressed regret at Moscow’s decision. The United States considered Russia’s decision a “big mistake”, noting that in this regard they see no reason to change their nuclear policy. “Russia’s announcement that it is suspending participation in START is deeply regrettable and irresponsible,” US Secretary of State Blinken said.
