A court in Ukraine banned the activities of the Party of Regions, whose leader until March 2014 was the country’s ex-president Viktor Yanukovych. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Security Service of Ukraine.
The decision was made after consideration of the claim of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic, prepared based on the materials of the SBU and the State Bureau of Investigation. According to the court decision, the property of the party will be transferred to state ownership. Assets are now being assessed by experts, the SBU said.
The department calls the party pro-Russian. Its representatives, according to the SBU, expressed support for Russia even before the start of the military operation.
The Party of Regions (originally called the Party of Regional Revival of Ukraine) was founded in 1997 and initially supported the then President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma. In 2003, the party was headed by Viktor Yanukovych. He suspended his membership and became honorary chairman when he was elected president (according to Ukrainian law, the head of state must be non-partisan). Yanukovych was expelled from the Party of Regions at the end of March 2014, after the change of power in Ukraine and his departure from the country.
