Inmates from Azuay and Cotopaxi refused to receive their food in solidarity with the massacre at the Litoral Penitentiary

So far, the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed 68 people killed and 25 wounded.

Inmates of the prisons of Azuay and Cotopaxi refused to receive their food for breakfast and lunch as an apparent sample of solidarity with the inmates of the Litoral Penitentiary. This, after the massacre that took place on the night of Friday 12 and early in the morning of Saturday, November 13, 2021.

The National Service of Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) reported on these measures through its Twitter account.

Given the situation, they have summoned the provincial authorities, ward coordinators and representatives of inmates to reach an agreement, maintains the SNAI.

In addition, they reported that they are monitoring health status of the prisoners.

The first information provided by the Government on the massacre was that 58 people were killed and 12 wounded. However, in a post by State Attorney General’s Office reported that this list amounts to 68 murdered inmates and 25 wounded. (I)
