Pavilion 2 and the transitory area of the Litoral Penitentiary were the scenes where the massacre was recorded on the night of Friday 12 and early in the morning of Saturday 13.
According to Tannya Varela, general commander of the Police, the clashes began at 7:00 p.m. on Friday the 12th.
The commander indicated that of the 58 inmates killed, 10 belonged to pavilion 2 and the others are in the transitory area.
He commented that after the alert came tactical units of the Police. However, during the first hours they carried out dissuasive actions towards the inmates who were wandering outside their respective pavilions.

Pablo Arosemena, governor of Guayas, explained that around 9:35 p.m. there were detonations and the crossing of bullets near the entrance door of the Penitentiary.
Inmates from pavilion 3 began to attack those held in pavilion 2. At that time, Arosemena said, there was a 90% risk that police officers would lose their lives when entering the fighting area. For this reason they continued with dissuasive actions such as the launching of tear gas.

“The level of savagery, the level of inhumanity of the PPLs who wanted to enter ward 2 … They were not only firing and detonating, they were trying to make a hole in the wall, they couldn’t get in through the door, they wanted to make a big hole, put dynamite and enter to be able to subdue them, ”said the governor.
Arosemema indicated that the inmates also burned mattresses to try to suffocate them. They also destroyed the lighting system in Hall 2.
Inmates from pavilions 7, 8 and 9 attacked the PPLs held in the transitional area.
The police officers only entered the pavilion at 02:20 on Saturday the 13th, Varela said.
After several hours, the uniformed men took control of the pavilion and protected the inmates held in that area.
Varela and Arosemena agreed that these events originated after the release of said prison by the head of a criminal organization days ago, by the decision of a judge alleging that he had served 60% of his sentence. (I)
