The governor of Guayas, Pablo Arosemena, confirmed that the death toll is 58. In addition, there are 12 injured receiving medical attention.
It is the second massacre of this semester. The last one was registered on September 28. There, 118 inmates died. More than 75% of the inmates of the pavilion where the massacre took place in prison Number 1 in Guayaquil did not have an enforceable sentence and 61.3% of those killed were between 20 and 30 years old.
This is known from the second massacre:
-A police report states that the mutiny at the Litoral Penitentiary began at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Neighbors in the area indicated that the gusts were heard until early Saturday morning.
-The inmates of pavilions 7, 8 and 9 were trying to enter pavilion 2, according to the police.
-To subdue the inmates of pavilion 2, the inmates who wanted to subdue them not only fired. They tried to make a hole in the wall. Mattresses were burned to try to poison them, according to the governor.
-The Police decided to enter Pavilion 2 at 02:00 this Saturday. The governor says that this allowed there to be no more fatalities.
-The commander of the Police, Tannya Varela, has reiterated that this is due to the dispute over territory within the Penitentiary. The commander questioned whether gang leaders have been released. He said that for this reason they are trying to dispute power in the pavilions.
-The Police remain in pavilion 2, protecting the prisoners.
-As happened in the September massacre, on Saturday morning strong videos began to circulate that would correspond to the massacre. In one of them, a group of inmates is seen cremating bodies in a courtyard. Videos of injured inmates were also circulating. The Police have not confirmed that it is this mutiny.
– Detainees transmitted videos from the Penitentiary in which they asked for help and expressed their fear at the gunshots that were heard in the pavilions. “They want to get in through one of the doors … Help us with the Police, with the military,” said an inmate from a transmission on social networks.
-President Guillermo Lasso announced that at 1:00 p.m. there will be a security committee in Ecu911. (I)
