UN Secretary General António Guterres announced the need to raise $1 billion to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by a powerful earthquake in Turkey. It is reported by Interfax.
“Today, the UN is making an appeal to raise $1 billion in humanitarian aid to people in Turkey, hit by the most devastating earthquakes in a century,” the Secretary General said in a statement.
It states that these funds will help to provide assistance to 5.2 million people within three months and accelerate the work of humanitarian organizations in Turkey.
“I call on the international community to intensify efforts and fully fund critical efforts to deal with the consequences of one of the largest natural disasters of our time,” the statement said.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred in Turkey on the night of February 6, followed by a series of echo shocks, the magnitude of one of them was 7.6. This earthquake led to serious destruction and casualties in neighboring Syria.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that the number of victims of a powerful earthquake in the country exceeded 35.4 thousand people.
