The chief doctor of the hospital in Kommunarka, where the figure skater Roman Kostomarov is being treated, spoke about his condition.
As Denis Protsenko noted to AiF, Kostomarov’s “organ dysfunction began to resolve in the last 48 hours.” “With such a severe infection, there are virtually no organs that would not be involved in this process. And we really want to believe that such dynamics will continue, but it is impossible to make any forecasts, ”said Protsenko, explaining that both Moscow doctors and federal specialists are involved in saving the skater.
The 2006 Turin Olympic champion was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia. On the same day, the doctors decided to transfer him to the medical center in Kommunarka. “The damage to the lung tissue was total – even mechanical ventilation did not allow us to maintain the level of oxygen at a sufficient level,” Protsenko noted, explaining that the only more intensive treatment was ECMO.
At the same time, doctors immediately understood that the disease would be very difficult. “The bacterium that was detected upon admission already gave us signals that the course of the disease would be very difficult, that it would proceed with necrosis and necrotic damage to the subcutaneous tissue and muscles,” Protsenko noted.
He also said that when Kostomarov entered Kommunarka, the results of research and analyzes spoke of a minimal chance of survival. “We understood that the methods by which we save lives have certain possible complications that may require surgical correction in the future,” Protsenko explained. However, this was the only chance to try to save the life of the skater, and all decisions were made jointly with him and his family.
