There is less than a week left until the election of departmental bodies, and citizens are analyzing the options for defining their vote.

In this context, with ballots that include at least a dozen candidates – in Quito and Guayaquil – resignation initiatives are emerging to strengthen the trend, but it is necessary to review the legal regulations that prevent this, and even how much political maturity such a decision represents.

Before the applications before the National Electoral Council (HNS), unity of tendencies was sought, there was talk of an excess of candidacies, but there was no interest in giving in in favor of any postulation. Late reconsideration shows ignorance and insufficient political maturity. Ignorance of the law, because qualified and registered candidacies can no longer be waived. This is how the Code of Democracy records it.

In the canton of Durán, in the province of Guayas, a candidate for mayor appeared in the media giving up and asking for a vote for one of his candidates, filling him with flattery.

Once qualified and registered, candidacies cannot be withdrawn, the CNE reminds those who want to reject them

In Quito, one of the mayoral candidates suggested that other candidates unite around his campaign to strengthen it and guarantee victory against the opposition trend.

All for the benefit of their cities, claim those who propose giving up the candidacy.

The ballots were approved by the CNE after they were qualified, registered and printed.

Citizens expect minimal seriousness from those who present themselves as an option for leading the province, canton or integration of any other body with the positions of the popular elections. The unity of the trend should have been promoted and specified before registration so that it did not become part of unachievable pre-election proposals or demagoguery. Now these speeches only add to the confusion, waste of time and even resources, since they will still appear on the ballots that will be received on February 5th. (OR)
