The results of last Sunday’s sectional elections show the resurgence of the Civil Revolution by winning the prefectures of the four most populous provinces (Pichincha, Guayas, Manabí and Azuay) and the mayors of Quito – with a low percentage, 25% – and Guayaquil – with more authority, almost 40% -.
The case that stands out the most in the last election is the latter, where the victory of Aquiles Álvarez over Cynthia Viteri put an end to the 31-year administration of the Social Christian Party (PSC) in this city, which was followed by the victory of Marcelo Aguiñaga over Susana González in the prefecture Guayas give Correísmo a double victory.
Political analysts said after the results that this represented the sum of the heavy voting held by the correísmo in Guayaquil and Guayas plus two other factors: the rejection of the current authorities seeking re-election and the division suffered by the PSC in recent months – even years – as other candidates who were previously or were close to that political group, despite the defeat, received votes that could help those re-elections.

Guayaquileños and other Guayasenses now hope that the new authorities will lead them to a better situation, amid the violence, insecurity and other social problems they face, trusting their actions in the next four years.
It remains to be seen how the cantonal councils, which are an important point for managing municipalities, will be organized. Partial results showed one split in Guayaquil, but with a majority in favor of Álvarez.
Regarding the eight-question referendum proposed by President Guillermo Lasso, we still have to wait for the final results provided by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
