China’s material support for Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine could fundamentally change relations between Washington and Beijing, said Karen Donfried, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
Speaking at a briefing on US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s trip to Germany, Turkey and Greece, Donfried recalled that “China and Russia have announced a borderless partnership.”
“We understand that there is a strategic rapprochement between China and Russia, but if we saw that China is providing material support to Russia” in a special operation in Ukraine, then this would “fundamentally change relations with China.”
Recall that in At the end of December 2022, the State Department stated that the US administration was concerned about the development of ties between Russia and China. As an employee of the American Foreign Ministry emphasized at the time, Washington is closely following Beijing’s actions in terms of the possibility of providing them with military assistance to Moscow and systematic assistance in circumventing sanctions. US officials have already said they have warned the Chinese authorities that they are ready to take action in the event of such moves by Beijing.
