The former President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev, released from prison on February 14, flew to Spain via Dubai for a medical examination together with his youngest son Kadyr. It is reported by Interfax.
Atambayev the day before, leaving the colony, said that he planned to leave for treatment, but then he would return.
Atambaev’s lawyer Sergei Slesarev said that there were no barriers to his client’s travel abroad.
“He needs a medical examination, after which a decision will be made on surgical intervention. It is still difficult to say how long it will take, ”said Slesarev.
He also commented on the remaining criminal cases against Atambayev.
“Legally, there is no justification in favor of the accusation. He could not be held accountable, even if there was something. Atambayev had an immunity status, which was violated,” the lawyer said.
On February 14, the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan announced that Atambaev’s case, in which he was sentenced to 11 years in prison, was sent for review due to newly discovered circumstances. The Pervomaisky Court of Bishkek allowed the ex-president to leave the country for treatment. Based on this decision, he was released from the colony.
Atambayev served as president from 2011 to 2017 and was stripped of his immunity in June 2019. After his arrest (August 8, 2019), several criminal cases were initiated against him.
On June 23, 2020, the Pervomaisky Court sentenced Atambaev to 11 years and two months in prison with confiscation of property in the case of the illegal release in 2013 of crime boss Aziz Batukaev. Subsequently, Atambaev was found not guilty of committing crimes under the articles “Abuse of official position” and “Corruption” of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan. The court also acquitted him in the case of organizing mass riots in October 2020 due to the lack of corpus delicti.
