The US government is making efforts to secure congressional approval of an additional $10 billion military aid package for Ukraine, The Washington Post reports.
According to the publication, it is expected that the next package of military assistance will be announced next week, “almost simultaneously with the announcement of additional sanctions against Russia.”
At the same time, the newspaper writes that a number of US officials who recently visited Ukraine told Kiev that, despite promises to support Ukraine “as long as it takes,” Washington expects to use the aid already provided more effectively.
“The critical nature of the next few months has already been brought to the attention of Kyiv in harsh terms,” the publication notes.
“We will keep trying to convince them that we can’t do everything and everything forever,” said one senior administration official, referring to Ukrainian leaders.
The official added that the administration was confident that it would be difficult to press the same level of military and economic aid to Kyiv from Congress at this time.
“As long as it takes” refers to the scale of the conflict. This does not apply to the amount of assistance,” the official added.
