Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to China and his meeting with Xi Jinping will signal stronger ties between the two countries “amid escalating tensions with the United States,” Bloomberg reported.

Raisi will reportedly pay an official visit to China on February 14. Both countries have strained relations with the US, and their trade relations have expanded significantly in recent years.

The agency notes that a few months ago, China took a more restrained stance towards Iran, including because of mass protests taking place there, but now Beijing is likely to “increase its authority in the oil-rich region.” In addition, Iran is strengthening its relationship with Russia, “which China considers a strategic partner,” Bloomberg emphasizes.

At the same time, the South China Morning Post linked Raisi’s visit to China with Iran’s “disappointment” over Xi Jinping’s meeting with Gulf leaders in mid-December. The publication notes that in a joint statement, Beijing supported the UAE and Saudi Arabia in the territorial dispute with Iran over the islands in the Strait of Hormuz. The visit of Raisi, according to the SCMP, should contribute to the establishment of “strategic relations”.
