A clandestine factory dedicated to the manufacture of counterfeit coins was found this weekend by the Transnational Crime Investigation Unit of the National Police.

The citizen of Colombian nationality who was found while making the coins was arrested in the parish of Tumbaco, in the northeast of Quito.
According to the Police, in this place national and foreign circulation coins were manufactured, however, it was not detailed from which countries. What they did find were fake $0.25, $0.50, and $1.00 denomination coins.
The illicit money was made in high-quality hydraulic presses. According to the investigation, they established that approximately 12,000 units were produced weekly in this place.

To carry out the raid in this operation, coordination was made with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the support of the Security Department HSI of the United States.

This crime would affect the popular economy of Ecuador by being fraudulently entered into the primary, secondary and tertiary economic sector.
The detainee would already have a criminal record for counterfeiting coins in Colombia.

These are the indications and results of the police operation:
- One detainee (records records).
- Two hydraulic presses.
- 2,000 metallic supports with similar characteristics to the original coins of the United States.
- 13 stamping molds for hydraulic press.
- Chemical inputs for electrolytic nickel bath.

The man apprehended by the police was transferred to the competent authority for prosecution. Meanwhile, the other indications were placed in chain of custody in the warehouses of the Judicial Police. (YO)
