Former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis won the second round of the presidential elections, according to the results after counting 99.5% of the ballots. It is reported by Interfax.
Christodoulidis received 52% of the vote. His opponent, career diplomat Andreas Mavroyiannis, scored 48% and admitted defeat.
49-year-old Christodoulidis served as Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus from 2018 to 2022, before that he was the official representative of the government. Before the elections, he was supported by the centrist and center-right parties.
Mavroyannis, 66, worked as a negotiator under the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiades, until May last year to resolve the situation in Cyprus. His candidacy is supported by the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL).
Both candidates were elected as independents.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus is elected for five years. The current head of state, Nikos Anastasiadis, has been in office since 2013. Under local law, he cannot be re-elected for a third term.
