Polish President Andrzej Duda said that almost 10,000 US troops are now in Poland. It is reported by RBC with reference to Duda’s interview with the French media.
“Today, with the increased presence of NATO on the eastern flank, almost 10,000 American troops are present on our soil,” Duda said.
According to him, Poland is also expanding its defensive capabilities and buying weapons. “In 2023, we will spend more than 4% of GDP on defense. This is twice as much as is expected from NATO allies,” he said.
At the beginning of last February, Poland decided to deploy US troops near the border with Ukraine. According to the Polish Ministry of Defense, it was about 1.7 thousand US troops from the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg. The Polish military cooperated with this division in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Last March, Duda decided to double the size of the Polish army, that is, up to 300,000 people (250,000 professional soldiers and 50,000 territorial defense troops). At that time, the defense of Poland was carried out by 115.5 thousand professional soldiers and 32 thousand territorial defense fighters.
