The US Federal Aviation Administration closed a section of airspace in the state of Montana due to “unnamed activities” of the country’s Department of Defense, Reuters reported.
According to the agency, flights were temporarily banned in an area of approximately 50 by 50 nautical miles (92.6 by 92.6 km) around the city of Le Havre near the border with Canada. The aviation authority called this area “national defense airspace.”
At the same time, the agency did not specify whether the closure of the sky was associated with an unidentified object in the sky over Canada. It had previously taken similar action when a Chinese balloon, which Washington considered a reconnaissance balloon, appeared in Montana airspace. He crossed Montana, reached South Carolina and was shot down by the US military there. Later, the aviation authority reported that a section of the sky was open again.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), in turn, explained that the military noticed an anomaly on the radar in Montana and took off a fighter for reconnaissance. “The aviation did not identify any object that could be correlated with radar changes,” the military confirmed.
Earlier, the US and Canadian Aerospace Defense Command reported an unidentified flying object in the sky over Northern Canada, which was shot down by the military.
