Geophysical Institute warns of possible volcanic ash fall in Chimborazo and Cañar

An ash cloud that reaches 2,000 meters above the crater is heading to the southwest.

The Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School warned this Friday of the possible ash fall in two provinces of Ecuador, after appreciating a cloud of volcanic dust that reaches 2,000 meters above the crater of the Sangay volcano.

In a report published on social networks, the Institute specified that since 03:40 local time (08:40 GMT) it has seen, through satellite images, an ash cloud that reaches 2,000 meters above the crater and is heading towards the south-west.

Consequently, there is the possibility of ash falls in the Andean provinces of Chimborazo and Cañar, he warned.

And he recalled that the phenomenon has been persistent within the current eruptive period, which began in May 2019.

The institute recommended taking the pertinent measures and receiving the information from official sources.

El Sangay, 5,230 meters high and located in the Amazon province of Morona Santiago, is part of the fifty volcanoes that Ecuador has, most of them located in the so-called “Avenue of the volcanoes”, in the Andean area.

This volcano is the last one in Ecuador to the south and its name, according to several researchers, comes from the Kichwa word “samkay”, which translates as scare or terrorize, although it could also come from the Shuar word “shanga”, which is interpreted as kind. (I)
