A team from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand has warned that as many as 15 million people around the world could be at risk of flooding due to melting glaciers. According to Gismeteo, this is according to the results of a research paper published in the journal Nature.

Scientists emphasize that the process of melting glaciers under the influence of climate change leads to the emergence of so-called glacial lakes, and the larger their volume and soil erosion, the greater the risk of a breakthrough of these lakes, which means the demand for water due to the destruction of natural barriers. At the same time, the researchers note that this can happen suddenly and cause significant damage.

According to researchers, the size and number of lake glaciers has been increasing since the early 90s of the last century, and approximately 15 million people may suffer due to their breakthroughs.

Among the most vulnerable, scientists identified residents of India, Pakistan, China and Peru.

The authors of the paper hope that their study will help governments and international organizations to take measures to prevent possible disasters.
