The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey has risen to 21,043. President Tayyip Erdogan said this during a speech in Diyarbakir province, TASS reports citing Turkish media.
“The earthquake on Monday was three times more destructive than the 1999 earthquake in the Sea of Marmara. The death toll was 21,043. 80,097 people were affected,” he said.
According to Erdogan, “Earthquakes with an epicenter in Kahramanmarash were felt a thousand kilometers from the epicenter, and destruction occurred in areas 500 km from its center.” “The state has mobilized all resources to eliminate the consequences of the disaster. I urge citizens to trust the authorities, we will not leave you in trouble! In 10 provinces of the disaster zone, about 160,000 people are working on the ground, including teams from abroad,” the Turkish president emphasized.
Recall, on February 6, two devastating earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 were recorded in the Pazardzhik region in Kahramanmarash and a magnitude of 7.6 in the Elbistan region. The earthquakes were reported to have been followed by another 1,330 aftershocks.
