The Lyubertsy City Court of the Moscow Region, on the basis of a guilty verdict by the jury, sentenced the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, to 22 years in prison for organizing and attempted murders of entrepreneurs in 2004-2005. It is reported by TASS.
“Assign Sergey Ivanovich Furgal a sentence of 22 years in prison with further serving in a strict regime colony,” Judge Gennady Tsoi said in the verdict.
At the same time, the court excluded from the verdict Furgal and Karepov episodes with the illegal acquisition of weapons due to the statute of limitations. The defendants were also credited with the time of their detention.
Former assistant to the ex-governor Andrey Karepov received 21 years in prison, businessman from Khabarovsk Andrey Paley was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the murder of Furgal’s competitors, and Marat Kadyrov, ex-inspector of the Mendeleevo airport security service in Yuzhno-Kurilsk, who deserved leniency from the jury, received 9.5 years in prison . The court announced only the introductory and operative parts of the verdict.
The court exacted from the defendants in favor of the victims about 500 thousand rubles each. To ensure the recovery from the convicts, the previously imposed arrest on the property and money of the defendants was upheld.
Furgal’s defense representatives and lawyers for other defendants in the case said they would seek an appeal against the verdict.
Karapetyan noted that Furgal would not be transferred to a colony to serve his sentence until the sentence entered into force.
“According to Russian law, before the sentence comes into force, there are no grounds for transferring Furgal to a colony for further serving the sentence,” the defender said.
