At the Pablo Arturo Suárez hospital, 60% of patients who are or were in intensive care unit (ICU) beds have not been vaccinated.
As of November 8, the occupation in hospitalization to treat coronavirus in Quito was one 49 %, and for beds in intensive care unit (ICU) from 74 %, without people waiting for both specialties.
This was reported by the Health Secretary of the Municipality of Quito on the epidemiological situation in the capital of the Republic in the week of November 1 to 8.
Since last week, in the Pablo Arturo Suárez hospital of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), which is located in the north of Quito, income has increased of patients afflicted by coronavirus, which, for their authorities, does not mean a rebound in infections.
Last Wednesday there were eleven patients in the hospitalization area with coronavirus and fourteen people in intensive care unit (ICU) beds.
That hospital was assigned as of reference to treat disease; although, if the case is highly specialized, they go to the Eugenio Espejo, which is in the north center of the city.
According to Jorge Peñaherrera, manager of the Pablo Arturo Suárez hospital, the percentage of patients is variable and they have allocated 25 beds for hospitalization and 16 for ICU. They could be expanded, if necessary, to 109 in hospitalization out of a total of 240, and 39 in ICU: 7 non-COVID ICU and 32 for coronavirus.
He argued that, since last week, there was a increase in cases, especially in ICU. A decrease in cases has been observed since August.
“We are seeing the consequences of people has not been vaccinated (…) It is not only because of the relaxation of the population, they no longer wear the mask … “, he said.
Two new anti-coronavirus vaccination points open in the south of Quito this weekend; one will be in a mall
He estimated that the 60% of patients who are or were in the ICU have not been vaccinated and the remaining 40% have had a first dose or you are vaccinated and the time has not elapsed for the drug to take effect, that is, one to three months.
He explained that in each hospital there is a respiratory triage area, a case is identified and it is referred to Pablo Arturo Suárez.
That health home has been reopening its services in other areas, although due to a capacity issue it is not 100%. Before, for example, they attended 600 people in external consultation; now 400 patients are being cared for.
