Inamhi issues alert for possible heavy rains with storms on the coast and the Amazon

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) indicates that between February 8 and 13, rain and storm events are expected to develop in the coastal and Amazon region, with the highest intensities occurring on the 10th, 11th and 12th.

On the coast, moderate and heavy rains are expected in much of the region with electrical storms to the north and interior of the region. The most intense will be presented in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santo Domingo, Los Ríos and Guayas.

In the mountains, rainfall of moderate intensity will occur in the south of the region. The most important events will take place in the province of Loja.

For the east, moderate rainfall is expected with an emphasis on the north of the region and the foothills of the mountain range, and gusts of wind for February 10 and 11. The most intense will occur in Sucumbíos, Napo and Orellana.

This atmospheric instability responds, among other factors, due to the ingress of moisture from the country (intertropical convergence zone), high precipitable water contentas well as convergent and divergent processes, details the Inamhi.

The entity believes it likely that, due to these rains, there is accumulation of water in homes, businesses and susceptible roads. In addition, road conditions could be affected by standing water, landslides and fog banks, and it is possible that there are overflows of bodies of water in locations where greater intensity is expected.
