During 2022, 4,306 people renounced Russian citizenship, RBC reports with reference to the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, which cites data based on data from diplomatic missions and consular offices of the country abroad.
As noted, the number of those who renounced Russian citizenship last year was the largest in the last three years (3877 people in 2020 and 4055 in 2021). However, in 2019, 50 more people refused Russian citizenship – 4356 people.
The Foreign Ministry said that, taking into account the restrictions on the reception of visitors in 2020-2021 due to sanitary and epidemiological requirements, “there are no special changes in the dynamics of the number of applications for registration of renunciation of Russian citizenship abroad.”
At the same time, 40 people refused Russian citizenship inside Russia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported earlier. How many such statements were in previous years, was not reported.
In addition, as the agency notes, in 2022 there was a decrease in the number of those who, on the contrary, received Russian citizenship. Compared to 2021, it decreased by 6.4% and amounted to just over 691 thousand people. In 2021, the decision to grant Russian citizenship was made in respect of more than 735 thousand people.
In the past few years, the number of those who received Russian citizenship has increased: for example, in 2018, about 269 thousand people received a passport, in 2019 – almost 498 thousand, in 2020 – 656 thousand.
