The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) at this stage did not see additional opportunities to investigate the downing of MH17. Thus, according to the Dutch prosecutor’s office, the investigation will be suspended for the time being.
The statement emphasizes that such a decision does not mean that the JIT closes the case. Work may resume if new information becomes available.
The release notes that it is currently impossible to prove who the members of the Buk crew were, and it is also impossible to find out why they fired a missile at MH17, what their mission was and what information they had at the time of the shooting. Although much data has been obtained about the decision-making process associated with the Buk supply, the evidence collected is not specific enough to lead to a guilty verdict in court, prosecutors said. Therefore, no new court cases are currently being initiated.
Recall that in November 2022, the District Court of The Hague found Russians Igor Girkin (Strelkov), Sergei Dubinsky and Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko guilty in absentia in the case of the crash of a Boeing-777 plane. They were sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment. The fourth defendant, Russian citizen Oleg Pulatov, was declared innocent, despite the fact that the prosecutor’s office demanded punishment for him as well.
According to the court decision, Girkin, Dubinsky and Kharchenko must also pay at least 16 million euros in compensation.
The court also ruled that the liner was shot down by a Buk missile fired from Pervomaisky.
The Boeing-777 of Malaysia Airlines, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down in the sky over the Donetsk region on July 17, 2014. All 298 people on board were killed.
