The construction of a number of infrastructure projects in St. Petersburg will require the demolition of about 200 historic buildings. According to Kommersant, Deputy Chairman of the KGIOP Alexei Mikhailov admitted that about 160 houses will be demolished on Narva Zastava, more than 20 on Ligovsky Prospekt and eight on Obukhovskoy Oborona Prospekt. Among those to be demolished are eight buildings erected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the school of the poetess Olga Berggolts,
The day before, the Legislative Assembly held hearings on amendments to city law No. 820-7 “On the boundaries of the joint zones for the protection of cultural heritage sites located on the territory of St. Petersburg, land use regimes and requirements for urban planning regulations within the boundaries of these zones.” The bill was introduced by the governor of the city Alexander Beglov.
Alexei Mikhailov explained that the adjustment is necessary for the construction of a number of infrastructure projects: the Bolshoy Smolensky Bridge, the Latitudinal Expressway (SHMSD) and the passenger terminal of the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed railway. According to the document, a number of protective zones around historical sites are being transferred to protection zones. Due to the changes, it will be possible not only to demolish certain buildings, but also to build or reconstruct four schools and two universities, three sports facilities, and two healthcare institutions.
Kirill Strakhov, president of the 1870 City Self-Government Development Fund, believes that hearings on the bill were held too quickly. The governor submitted a bill on 5183 pages on the last day of January, and a week later it was considered by the deputies.
