A new study by researchers from University College London, the University of East Anglia and the University of Lyon has found that people sleep the least in early adulthood, before the age of 33. It is reported by incrussia.ru with reference to a study published in the journal Nature Communications.

More than 730,000 volunteers from 63 countries took part in the study. The researchers looked at how sleep patterns change throughout life and how they differ between people in different countries.

According to the study, sleep averaged 7.01 hours per night, with women sleeping an average of 7.5 minutes longer than men.

The youngest volunteers (minimum age 19) slept the most, with sleep duration decreasing between the ages of 20 and 30 and then stabilizing by age 50, increasing again.

Some of the patterns identified (sleep decreases at age 33 and increases again at age 53) were the same for men and women, as well as for different countries and levels of education.

According to scientists, the decrease in sleep in middle age may be associated with work and childcare. “We found that globally, people sleep less in mid-adulthood, but average sleep duration varies by region and country,” said team leader Professor Hugo Spears.

People sleep the most (20-40 minutes longer than in other countries) in Eastern European countries such as Albania, Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic, and the least in Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Generally, people sleep a little less in countries closer to the equator.
