In Carchi, the Democratic Left is no longer the leading political force

Julio César Robles Guevara, former mayor of Tulcán on two occasions and leader of the Conservative Social Movement, is the virtual prefect of Carchi, with a marked advantage over Melva Cadena, former vice prefect of the Democratic Left (ID) in two terms.

Robles four years ago was defeated by Guillermo Herrera, of the ID, who was re-elected with a significant advantage, which allowed him to access the prefecture.

The new prefect breaks 22 consecutive years in which the ID directed the Provincial Government of Carchi, under the helm of Herrera, former national president of the ID, who served as an official, twice was vice-prefect and twice prefect.

Analysts agree that the social democracy is the great victim of the electoral day of February 5, since it has just lost not only the prefecture but also the mayoralties of Montúfar and Mira.

Robles, of conservative affiliation, made a break in politics, establishing an alliance with various sectors of the left, right and center.

Under a narrative of recovering the province and betting on the new prefecture, Julio Robles, maintains that with 70% of the votes counted, he has received 60% acceptance. Processed in the National Electoral Council (CNE) 98.57% of tally sheets, obtained 61.04%.

Among the pending issues to be addressed are roads, productivity, construction of irrigation canals, among others.

In Tulcán, the new mayor is Andrés Ruano, an eco-conservative, but now linked to the Reto movement.

He was a councilor for 10 years, he held the vice mayor’s office. He narrowly defeated the current mayor Cristian Benavides, from Somos, who acknowledged defeat and thanked the voters.

“I thank God for the opportunity to have allowed me to serve you, I wish the greatest success to the new mayor, because his success entails the lives of people and the fulfillment of their desires,” said Benavides.

In Montúfar, the second Carchense cantonal jurisdiction, Raúl Lucero, of the Conservative Social Movement will lead this canton, after beating Andrés Ponce, who was seeking re-election.

Lucero previously carried out the functions of commissioner and general secretary in the GAD of Montúfar and four years ago he was second, when he tried to reach that mayor’s office.

For Diego Lucero, a local political analyst, the big loser in the contest is the Democratic Left party, after having been in the government of the province for more than 20 years and having administered some cantons through their mayors.

Lucero believes that the Conservative Social Movement is being repositioned, hand in hand with the strong personal leadership of Julio Robles.
