Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to visit Brussels as part of the EU summit on February 9. It is reported by The Brussels Times, citing its sources.

It is expected that the extraordinary plenary session of the European Parliament will begin with a speech by Zelensky, after which he will join the leaders of the EU countries.

On February 3, Zelensky said that the Ukrainian authorities intend to start negotiations on the country’s accession to the European Union as soon as possible. In his opinion, the integration of Ukraine and the EU is irreversible and is supported by the Europeans, and in Kyiv they fulfilled 72% of the obligations under the association agreement and showed progress in implementing the recommendations of the European Commission.

European Council President Charles Michel said at the EU-Ukraine summit that after receiving the status of a candidate member of the alliance, Ukraine has made “considerable progress” in judicial reform and the fight against corruption. On the eve of the meeting, the EC published an analytical report on the degree of Ukraine’s readiness to join the EU, which showed that in the field of foreign policy the country showed a “high level” of preparation, but large-scale work is required to update the financial control system.

Ukraine received EU candidate status last June and applied for membership on February 26, two days after the start of the Russian special operation. Moscow called it an internal affair of Kyiv.
