The European Union called on Georgia to join the international sanctions against Russia in the aviation sector and refuse the possible resumption of air traffic with the Russian Federation. According to Interfax with reference to the Georgian edition of Netgazeti, this was announced by the official representative of the EU Foreign Service, Peter Stano.
“We are aware of the discussions on the possible resumption of air traffic between Russia and Georgia. The European Union calls on Georgia to join international sanctions against Russia in the aviation sector,” Stano said.
Air communication between Georgia and Russia was interrupted in 2019 at the initiative of the Russian side.
In January of this year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not rule out the possibility of resuming flights to Georgia. In turn, the representative of the ruling party “Georgian Dream” Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters that Tbilisi is not conducting any negotiations with Russia on the resumption of air traffic.
According to Georgian media, the US State Department issued a statement, which, in particular, said that the resumption of air traffic between Georgia and Russia would create a threat of sanctions against companies servicing Russian aircraft in Georgia.
Kobakhidze added that the decision to ban flights “has had a very negative impact on the situation of about 800,000 natives of Georgia living in Russia.” “It was a sanction against us. If someone wants to lift this sanction, then this is their business, ”he said.
