Eleven months have passed since the fateful and multiple murders that occurred in the Calpaz community, in San Cristóbal Alto, Montúfar canton, Carchi province. In an effort to kill his ex-girlfriend, a man blinded by his jealousy also attacked his own 5-year-old daughter, her in-laws and her sister-in-law.
Ana Toro Pastaz, the wife of the man with whom she did not live, was the target of the attack; but ironically, she was the only survivor: the rest of the family did die.
The victims were the spouses Iván Toro and Oliva Pastaz (the man’s in-laws); their daughter, Ángela Toro (sister-in-law); and the minor.
After completing the event, on March 9, 2022, the man fled the scene, with no information about him so far.

In the Toro Pastaz family, who lives in a small community that borders the páramo, there is pain and a desire for justice for the mourning that this unprecedented violent act left them in the province and in the country.
According to investigations into the case, Danilo Ch. Ch., who is on the list of the most wanted for gender violence in Ecuador, would have fled to Colombia taking advantage of the proximity that exists from this rural community to the northern border.

The affected family was engaged in agricultural work and small livestock in Calpaz.
Danilo Ch. would have threatened to kill them days before the event. But the now deceased were far from imagining that the man would comply with the warning and in such a horrendous way. He shot his ex-wife, who survived the attack, in the eye and chest.
The couple no longer lived together. According to the survivor of the attack, the sentimental relationship had deteriorated.
On the day of the attack, once the four crimes had been completed and after injuring his former sentimental partner, the man fled from this secluded place on a motorcycle, which he stole and which was later found without him.
From that same March 9, 2022, search groups were activated in the extensive wasteland, led by the then commander of the Carchi Police Subzone, who remained in San Gabriel directing the investigation.
Once the time in flagrante had expired (24 hours), and because the suspect was not located, the Prosecutor’s Office requested the arrest for investigative purposes of Danilo Ch. for allegedly attempted femicide and murder, in a real contest of infractions.
The real contest of infractions would be for femicide, murder and attempted femicide. According to Hernán López, criminal judge in Carchi, in this case the accumulation of sentences up to a maximum of forty years is applicable.
As a result of the event, several actions have been carried out by the National Directorate of Crimes against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion and Kidnappings (Dinased) of Carchi. These include coordination with the Colombian Police, in order to exchange information and find the whereabouts of the suspect.
The photograph and name of the main accused appear on the list of the most wanted for gender violence in Ecuador, who would presumably be in a Colombian town.

César Lozada mentioned that those who commit crimes of this magnitude usually relax and decide to leave the places where they temporarily hide.
