After 15 years of its last restoration, the cathedral of Ambato enters maintenance

Little by little the dark color of the dome of the cathedral is turning white as part of the work that the temple has been undergoing for about three weeks.

Father Mauro Cuevas, parish priest of the cathedral, reported that, after the recovery that was made fifteen years ago, a maintenance and care process is being carried out.

Cuevas indicated that a strong restoration work is being done, but that it is carried out with all the security measures, according to the characteristics of the Ambato cathedral.

The parish priest commented that sporadic works have been carried out to avoid further deterioration. Therefore, now the work is broader and more detailed, especially focused on the painting of the temple.

He recognized that for the maintenance works there were economic contributions as expressions of generosity from some people and sectors, but that especially there was an assignment from the Municipality of Ambato, which has allowed the work to be carried out.

Edwin Jaramillo is the contractor in charge of the work on the cathedral. He assured that the church is subject to the recovery of the façade. For this reason, washing tasks are carried out in the dome to remove all accumulated dirt, ash, soot and dust.

Jaramillo commented that, after carrying out this process, a sealant will be applied and white waterproofing will be placed on top. To work on the dome, the workers use a mountaineering harness, hanging from a dynamic rope.

He explained that part of the work carried out on the façade also includes the doors. The wood will be sanded and sealed to reapply a coat of lacquer.

The work is scheduled for four months.

For Jaramillo, it is advisable to do this type of maintenance every five or six years. The contractor was commissioned to carry out the rehabilitation work almost fifteen years ago. (YO)
