German authorities are considering redirecting subsidies allocated to close coal-fired power plants to the military “to help defense manufacturers build new production facilities,” Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the interlocutors of the agency, the federal government is discussing with regional authorities the issues of providing the German armed forces with more weapons and ammunition, as well as creating jobs in those regions that have been more affected by the abandonment of coal.
The German armed forces have been experiencing problems for several years due to outdated and partially faulty equipment, recalls Bloomberg. In December 2022, Chancellor Olaf Scholz reported a shortage of ammunition in the Bundeswehr.
Last summer, amid the gas crisis in Germany, two coal-fired power plants resumed operation. Despite this, Jennifer Morgan, the special representative of the German government for climate, said that the authorities are not abandoning the plan to gradually phase out coal as an energy source by 2030.
