As a result of a dendrochronological study conducted by specialists from Columbia University in collaboration with Singaporean and Pakistani colleagues, it turned out that over the past 400 years, droughts have become increasingly common in Afghan and Pakistani territories. It is reported by Gismeteo with reference to a publication in Geophysical Research Letters.
As part of their work, the researchers studied the growth rings of trees that grew in the Hindu Kush mountains, as well as in the Kabul River basin from the 17th to the 21st century. Scientists note that the trends of the last four centuries clearly indicate an increase in the intensity of droughts, although they have become shorter and more frequent, while alternating with frequent periods of high humidity.
Both floods and droughts are manifestations of natural hydro-climatic variability, thus not mutually exclusive, but the speed and intensity of these phenomena may increase against the backdrop of global warming, scientists warn.
