The head physician and obstetrician-gynecologist were detained in St. Petersburg on suspicion of child trafficking. It is reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the Main Investigative Committee of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the city.
“GSU of the Investigative Committee of Russia for St. Petersburg, as part of the investigation of a criminal case initiated on the grounds of a crime under paragraphs “a”, “b”, part 2 of Art. 127.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Trafficking in Human Beings”, the 44-year-old general director (chief physician), as well as the 37-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist of one of the medical centers, were detained, ”the message says.
The investigation believes that the suspects provided paid services in violation of the current legislation on the use of assisted reproductive technologies by a single man in June 2019. They entered into an agreement with a foreigner, then he also signed an agreement with a donor agency that matched two surrogate mothers.
In the summer of 2020, surrogate mothers gave birth to a boy and a girl, whose genetic father is a foreign citizen. The man took one child abroad, and the second died of a disease while in St. Petersburg with a nanny.
In the criminal case, the necessary investigative actions are being carried out, the issue of choosing a measure of restraint by the suspect and bringing charges is being decided.
