The German Cabinet of Ministers issued a permit for the export of Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine. According to TASS, this was announced by the official representative of the Cabinet of Ministers, Steffen Hebeshtreit, without giving any details.
“I can confirm that one permit has been issued. I can’t provide any other information,” he said. Hebeshtreit also did not specify from whom exactly such a request came.
The armed forces of Germany do not use the Leopard 1. Earlier, the media wrote that German defense enterprises could send such tanks.
On January 25, the US authorities announced their intention to transfer 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv. On the same day, the German government confirmed that it would send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and issue permission to other countries to re-export these vehicles. According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Leopard 2 will be sent to Ukraine “until the end of March.”
Britain, Norway, Poland, Slovakia and France also announced their intention to provide Western-made tanks to Kyiv. Kyiv expects to receive up to 140 tanks from 12 states as the first batch.
