Information from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) newspaper that CIA chief William Burns allegedly offered Russia a fifth of the territory of Ukraine to end the conflict is not true, said Sean Davitt, deputy spokesman for the White House National Security Council. At the same time, he added that the US Central Intelligence Agency would say “the same thing,” RBC reports.
An unnamed CIA official also called NZZ’s claims that Burns secretly visited Moscow in January and made a similar proposal on behalf of the White House “completely false.”
Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, found the newspaper’s material “interesting” but declined to “comment on the speculation.”
Recall that earlier NZZ, citing two German politicians, wrote that US President Joe Biden in January instructed the head of the CIA, William Burns, to assess the readiness of Russia and Ukraine for peace talks. The proposal of the head of American intelligence to Kyiv provided for “peace in exchange for land”, Moscow – “land in exchange for peace.” Under the “land” meant about 20% of the territory of Ukraine, the newspaper wrote. Both Russia and Ukraine, according to sources, rejected the proposal, after which the West agreed to supply tanks to Ukraine.
