The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry protested in connection with the “inhumane treatment” of the former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who is under arrest, and called for him to be handed over to Kyiv. It is reported by TASS.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly protests the inhumane treatment of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili, who is being held behind bars in Georgia,” the ministry said. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that the Georgian authorities used psychological and physical violence against Saakashvili, denied him urgently needed medical care, deliberately creating an immediate threat to his life.

“We call on the Georgian authorities to immediately stop mocking Mikheil Saakashvili and hand him over to Ukraine,” the statement says.

The Foreign Ministry also appealed to foreign governments and international organizations with a request “to stand up publicly in defense of a Ukrainian citizen, the former president of Georgia, whose life was under threat due to political repression by the Georgian authorities.”

Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Georgian authorities daily torture Saakashvili and seek to kill him. In response, the Minister of Justice of Georgia, Rati Bregadze, called Zelensky’s accusations against the Georgian authorities offensive.
