A US citizen has been detained in Jerusalem for attempting to vandalize a Christian church in the Old City. This is reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the Israeli police.
Law enforcers noted that the suspect was caught red-handed by the joint efforts of the police and church security. The attacker, a 40-year-old American tourist, entered the temple and smashed one of the statues there.
“The suspect has been taken to the police station for questioning. An evaluation is currently underway to determine his mental health,” the police said.
The press service emphasized that the Israeli police take damage to religious institutions and objects very seriously.
The incident took place in the Church of the Condemnation, a Roman Catholic church in the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem, which is part of the Franciscan monastery of the Flagellation. The temple was erected on the site where, according to legend, Jesus Christ took his cross after being sentenced to death by crucifixion.
The 12th channel of Israeli television has distributed a video from the scene of the incident, which shows that the attacker managed to knock down the statue of Jesus Christ, which was inside the church, from the pedestal.
