For some people, calls to love themselves and always do only what they really want seem wrong, as if they are being asked to become complete egoists, indifferent to the experiences of other people. About why you should not confuse self-care and selfishness, psychologist Mikhail Labkovsky told in his Telegram channel.

According to him, there is no such thing as “healthy egoism” at all. If a person can think exclusively about his own interests and does not notice the feelings and desires of the people around him at all, this is an alarming sign. Usually such people suffer a lot deep inside, and they simply do not have the strength and resources to pay attention to someone else.

So, the psychologist pointed out, if a person stubbornly defends only his own interests, if he does not see and does not notice the interests of those around him point-blank and does not listen to anyone, it is quite possible that in fact he is very ill – and he is concentrated only on his pain.

A person who truly loves himself may well think about the interests of others. He understands well what he wants, he may well help others – but on the condition that such help does not run counter to his values. In addition, a person who loves and appreciates himself does not try to please everyone and seem good. It would never occur to him to achieve his goal through manipulation.

According to the psychologist, there is absolutely nothing wrong with healthy self-love and adequate self-esteem. Moreover, it is this kind of love that turns us into people who are able to think not only about themselves, but also about loved ones.
