Taras Kremen, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language in Ukraine, said that the ban on interpersonal communication in Russian should be extended to all Ukrainian universities. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Ukrainian media.

Thus, Kremen commented on the introduction of such a ban at the Kiev-Mohyla Academy on January 27.

“I support this decision and believe that every university should create the best opportunities for educating truly patriotic, strong-willed, educated citizens of Ukraine,” Kremen said.

According to him, the education sector should be an example in matters of protecting national interests. Kremen noted that according to Art. 21 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”, the language of the educational process is the state language”.

On October 21 last year, the head of the National Security and Defense Council, Alexei Danilov, said that the Russian language from Ukraine should “disappear altogether”, calling it “an element of hostile propaganda.” On November 11, the Russian language was excluded from the curricula of kindergartens and schools in Kyiv. This decision was made by the city council members.

The law Kremen is talking about came into force in 2019. He secured exclusive rights for Ukrainian in comparison with other languages and introduced mechanisms to control its use in many areas of life. The law also drastically curtailed the scope of non-state languages: 90% of programs on national channels must be broadcast in Ukrainian, the release of media only in Russian was banned, obliging to duplicate circulation in Ukrainian.
