Green kite: Everything you need to know about the passage of the comet in Ecuador

In February, several countries around the world will be able to observe an astronomical event that will not be experienced again for many years. It is about the passage of comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), known as the green comet.

The fact attracts the attention of amateur astronomers and the general public, since the comet passes every 50,000 years.

NASA pointed out that the inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere can observe the passage of the comet at the end of January, while in the South, it will be the first days of March.

“These comets are cold bodies of dust, of gas, that were formed when the Solar System originated,” explained Ericsson López, director of the Quito Astronomical Observatory.

Here are some of the things you need to know to observe it:

When will the comet be seen in Ecuador?

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) can be observed from February 1 to 3, although its closest approach will be on Wednesday and it can be observed from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. the next day.

How far will it be from Earth?

This will be located at 42.47 million kilometers.

Can it be seen with the naked eye?

The visualization will depend on the weather conditions of the day, however, it is required to have binoculars or a telescope. With the naked eye it can only be seen as a greenish stain.

Where can you go to see the comet?

The Quito Astronomical Observatory will open its doors to those interested to observe the comet between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. For this they must register here. There they will be provided with electronic telescopes.

Why is it called a green kite?

The comet was discovered in 2022 by a robotic telescope in southern California. It has green hair, from there comes its name. It is 1 kilometer in diameter. (YO)
