The UK government is close to handing over £2.3bn to Ukraine. According to The Telegraph, the country will receive money from the sale of the Chelsea football club, which was previously owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich.

As specified, the British government is ready to pay this money from a special sanctions account. The tranche will require EU approval.

According to TASS, the businessman does not have access to the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea, and does not participate in the process of their distribution. The money is at the disposal of the British authorities, the businessman’s press office told the agency.

In November 2022, British Deputy Foreign Secretary Leo Docherty reported that the country had not yet transferred to Ukraine the 2.5 billion pounds ($2.87 billion) paid for the purchase of London’s Chelsea football club from Abramovich.

Recall that billionaire Roman Abramovich announced the sale of Chelsea on March 2. The deal was officially closed on May 26. The team is now owned by a consortium of American businessman Todd Boely. The deal amounted to about 5 billion pounds. Abramovich himself did not receive these funds, as his assets in the UK were frozen.
