The World Health Organization (WHO) has extended the state of emergency in global health for three months, which was introduced in connection with the spread of coronavirus in January 2020.
The covid pandemic “continues to be a public health emergency of international concern,” according to a statement on the organization’s website.
Members of the emergency organizing committee expressed concern about the high number of deaths from COVID-19 compared to other respiratory infectious diseases. The committee also pointed to the insufficient introduction of a vaccine against the disease in low- and middle-income countries, as well as in countries with the highest income levels.
The meeting participants concluded that the pandemic may be “approaching a critical point.” “Achieving higher levels of herd immunity worldwide through infection and/or vaccination” could help limit the impact of coronavirus infection, experts said. However, they are of the opinion that this virus will remain a permanent pathogen in humans and animals “for the foreseeable future.”
The WHO COVID-19 Emergency Committee meets every three months. This meeting was the 14th since January 2020.
