The Quesos Saraguros company, from the province of Loja, represented Ecuador at the World Cheese Festival that took place in Asturias, Spain. 45 countries with 457 varieties of cheese participated in this international event.
For Antonio Contento, general manager of Quesos Saraguros, this experience helped them to show the excellence of their products and learn about other varieties from different parts of the world.
“In these last five years we have emerged as a brand. Since 2017 we have been participating at the national level and we have had silver, gold and bronze awards. We won at the National Cheese Fair in Ibarra. That was the ticket to travel to Asturias, Spain. A dream of rubbing shoulders with the best producers in the world is achieved. France for example participates with more than 100 samples. Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico participate in Latin America ”, expressed Contento.
Asturias is the largest cheese stain in Europe. That is why it was chosen this year as the venue for the World Cheese Festival. From Wednesday 3 to Sunday 7 November, the great cheese producers of the world met in the 33rd edition of this international event, classified as the most important in the sector worldwide.
More than 18 years ago the Contento family undertook the task of making cheese. Little by little they have increased their production and have spread to the national level.
“In our venture we started two people, my wife and I, then my children. Then we did something bigger, a family company in which my brother and my father participate. about 40 people, ”said Contento.

The producer indicated that during the quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his sales tripled in the large supermarket chains.
At present, the company has expanded to other production lines such as liquors, preserves and its well-known pizza. In dairy they offer derivatives such as: yogurt, delicacy, sweets and a variety of cheeses such as pesto, leaf, cheddar, dambo, feta, fontina, mozzarella, smoked, kneaded, fresh, with oregano, chili and basil.
This establishment is located in the Ilincho community, ten minutes from the central part of the Saraguro canton, Loja province.
Contento recommended that the entrepreneurs receive training in production and marketing issues. (I)
