Former high-ranking FBI official Charles McGonigal has been arrested in New York. According to the US Department of Justice, he is accused of working for Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska, who is under US sanctions.
ABC News claims McGonigal is one of the highest-ranking former FBI officers ever charged with a crime.
Another defendant in the case is a US citizen, former Russian diplomat Sergei Shestakov. He worked in New York as a court interpreter.
They are accused of conspiring to violate sanctions, as well as conspiring to launder funds.
In addition, Shestakov is also accused of giving false testimony.
According to the text of the indictment, in 2019 McGonigal and Shestakov tried to arrange for Deripaska to be removed from the sanctions list. FBI Assistant Director Michael Driscoll said both detainees acted on Deripaska’s behalf and fraudulently used the American organization to “cover up their activities.”
In addition, another case was opened against McGonigal in Washington on charges of receiving $225,000 in cash from an Albanian citizen who worked for a Chinese energy company.
