Japan plans to roughly double its defense budget in the next five years. According to Interfax, this was stated by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

According to the premier, Japan is facing “the most serious and complex” security situation since the end of World War II.

At the same time, Kishida pointed out that Japan’s priority should be “active diplomacy”, but “defense power is required to support it.”

Kishida also touched upon the topic of energy security. He promised that the government will promote the construction of new generation reactors at nuclear power plants and extend the life of nuclear reactors.

Speaking about domestic policy, Kishida also announced his intention to take decisive action to change the situation with declining birth rates, in particular, to increase financial support for families with children.

“We must create a child-centered economic society and change the birth rate,” he said.
